Before a student of knowledge masters the complexities of Arabic grammar, the intricacies of fiqh, or the details of hadeeth criticism, he or she must have firm knowledge and belief in the fundamentals of our deen. Our 'aqeedah is the pillar by which our deen stands firm, the fertile land from which all of our actions blossom, and it is the foundation from which all other Islamic sciences grow.

'Aqeedah is linguistically derived from the term 'aqadah' - a verb which means "to hold fast to" or "to establish". According to our scholars, 'aqeedah is the firm creed and beliefs that one's heart is fixed upon without any wavering or doubt. Are we certain about these beliefs to which our hearts should be tied? How well do we know the fundamental tenets of Islam, relating to our eman in Allah (swt), in the prophets, the books, the angels, the Last day and Qadr [fate]?

Topics covered include:

  • Definition, Importance and Categories of Tawheed
  • Tawheed in Allah's Lordship (Ruboobiyyah): reality and definition
  • Western Proofs for the Existence of God (Ontological, Cosmological, Kalam, etc.)
  • Atheism (arguments; refutation)
  • Allah's Right to Be Worshiped (Uloohiyyah)
  • Manifestations of Worship (Du'a, Sajdah, Tawwakul, Sabr, etc...)
  • Deviations in Worship (Talismans, Magic, Astrology, etc...)
  • Other concepts (Tabarruk; Tawassul; Shafa'aah; etc...)
  • Shirk: definition; history; dangers; categories; causes

From the Back Cover:

Tawheed, more precisely expressed in the Shahaadah, is the pillar by which our deen stands firm, the fertile land from which all of our actions blossom, and is the foundation from which all other Islamic sciences grow.

"I learned that you can never know enough about Aqeedah, and that the more you go over it the stronger you become. It increased the standard I was aiming for, and I wanted to try harder, and be better." -An AlMaghrib Student

The Light of Guidance--Fundamentals of Faith addresses and clarifies the principle of Tawheed in relation to the Shahaadah, "Laa elaaha il-Ial-laah..." (There is no diety worthy of worship except Allah). Tawheed is linguistically derived from the term 'wahhada' - a verb which means "to unite, unify" or "to consolidate". According to our scholars, tawheed is realizing and maintaining Allah's unity in all of man's actions which directly or indirectly relate to Him.

Ustaadh Yasir Qadhi addresses the concepts of Tawheed Ruboobiyyah and Uloohiyyah in detail. He then analyzes societal conceptions of God, both Muslim and non-Muslim alike, that have challenged pure, monotheistic Islamic thought during our times and eras that have long passed us. Shaykh Yasir then will help us identify our own understanding of Laa elaaha il-lal-laah; are we certain about this statement, about this belief to which our hearts should be tied? Are our hearts fixed upon it without any wavering or doubt?

"Masha'allah, Shaykh Yasir is truly one of the best teachers I've ever had. His speaking skills, his articulation, and his overall style of teaching kept me captivated throughout the entire two weekends. I never caught myself falling asleep alhamdulillah." -An AlMaghrib Student

Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston,Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. Presently he is pursuing his doctorate in Religious Studies at Yale University in New Haven, CT. At the AlMaghrib Institute, he serves as the Dean of Academic Affairs and teaches the Light of Guidance and the Light Upon Light seminars, focusing on aqeedah.
